Forced marriage is not uncommon in Berlin. As a form of domestic and sexual violence, it violates human rights as well as national and international law. Under Section 237 of the German Criminal Code (§ 237 StGB), forced marriage is a criminal offence.
Elisi Evi e.V. is an active member of the Berlin Working Group Against Forced Marriage (Berliner Arbeitskreis gegen Zwangsverheiratung) and offers workshops in schools as part of our prevention work.

Which topics are covered?
Love, relationships, family – these are issues that matter to young people. But what can you do when you’re under pressure? When decisions about your life are being made without you?
In this workshop, we’ll explore the following topics::
- What’s the difference between an arranged marriage and a forced marriage?
- What rights do you have – within your family, in your relationships, and under the law?
- Where can you get help if you feel under pressure?
- How can you stand up for yourself without putting yourself in danger?
What can the group expect:
Knowledge: Facts about forced marriage, child marriage and young people’s rights – explained simply, without taboos.
Discussion: In small groups, we talk about boundaries, respect and self-determination.
Practical exercises: Using everyday examples and role-plays, we practise with the group how to say ‘no’ and seek help.
Support networks: We introduce participants to advice centres and emergency numbers that can support them – confidentially and free of charge.
For teachers:
We will consult with you in advance to tailor the session to your class. The workshop is designed to be participatory, age-appropriate and culturally sensitive. We use anonymous question boxes, interactive methods and accessible information materials to engage all pupils – including those who might otherwise be too shy to ask questions.

Recognising forced marriage – protecting those affected – learning how to take action
As a teacher or school social worker, how can I spot the warning signs? How can I support young people affected by this in a culturally sensitive way? And where can I find support?
Our workshop covers:
Facts & context: Current figures, and the cultural and social background to forced marriage in Berlin.
Legal framework: Which laws protect those affected? What options do I have as a teacher or social worker?
Practical support: An overview of advice centres, safe houses and emergency contacts, including specific points of contact for urgent cases.
Prevention & Intervention: How do I approach those affected? How do I initiate support processes? Role-plays and case studies reinforce what has been learnt.
Why this workshop?
Many young people do not know who to turn to – and professionals often feel unsure about how to deal with the issue. Our aim: to impart knowledge, build confidence in taking action and highlight networks to effectively support affected girls and young women.
